At a very young age, my mom had a music box that she brought into the piano room to show me. I didn't know what a music box was at the time, but she inserted the key and began winding it . When the music began playing, we were both quiet. I just sat and listened, and it was like my soul connected with the music itself and in that moment all I wanted to do was describe what I was hearing. I couldn't describe it, so all I could do is think of the most beautiful thing I could think of to compare. "It sounds like God", I told her.
Since then, music has always spoken to me with that kind of significance and I still feel that way about God. It's an honor to take the stage and record in the studio knowing that the music I create impacts others in the same way it impacts me. |

My favorite thing about being in a band is playing live. The energy I get while on stage is unmatched by anything I have experienced thus far except for one time, I fought off a wild bear that was gonna attack and kill Garrett...that was real Intense (It was actually a dog). I got my first guitar for Christmas and have been playing ever since I was 14 years old. It's provided me with a lot of entertainment to say the least. I've broken my bedroom light, put many holes in the wall all to accomplish my desired guitar swing...yah, I am that hardcore, lol but not really. When I'm upset, bored, excited, happy or sad, I channel it through my music. For me, music is one of the most powerful tools of expression.

GARRETT OLMSTEAD (DRUMS)

In middle school the only elective we had was band, so naturally I wanted to take the only class I could actually choose for myself. The first day of band class the director lined up the students and individually asked them what instrument he or she wanted to play. When the band director asked me what I wanted to play, I looked him straight in the eye and said, "the electric guitar". The band director laughed and said, "there are no such things in marching band"! So I went for the second best choice, the drums, because at the time thought... ladies dig guys who play the drums. Little did I know that playing the drums would one day change my life and impact my faith forever. I eventually realized that I could take my love for drums and combine them with my passion for the teachings of Jesus Christ. Upon receiving this notion, Lyndon and I started the band Spiritual Plague. It's been an awesome adventure and I'm always looking forward to what's ahead.

Even though we have been together for over 5 years, I still get butterflies in my stomach before every show. I believe that's Gods way of letting me know I'm only human haha, and every show is just one more chance to impact those around me. In high school I use to think about life outside of school. What does God have in store for me? When I was asked to join Spiritual Plague, I was hesitant. I really wasn't that kind of guy who played instruments or felt comfortable in front of a large group of people, but as time went by I could see a change in myself. A change to stop living life for me, and to start living life for God.
I play the keyboards all by ear and have aced college level classes without using the Sheet Music placed before me. Everyday I wake up thankful for how far I have grown musically and faithfully, and as I continue my journey through life I am happy it's for God and not for me. |
